The one thing that drives me bonkers about Christians is how pathetically weak their faith is. This might seem contrary to how we think about Christians and Christianity as a whole; after all, Christians of all different faiths and sects are unified, organized and certainly well-funded. They gather weekly (sometimes more, sometimes less) across the planet as a community to profess and carry out their faith. They can and will – at times – forcefully and loudly vocalize their disgust and hatred towards the pro-choice community, the LGBTQIA+ community and anyone else whose views and lifestyles are contrary to their so-called Christian values and beliefs.
For those of you who, like me, grew up raised in the Christian faith, everything I’m about to tell you should come as no surprise. Condensed as it may be for the sake of brevity, these teachings and beliefs have been thrust upon us from even before we realized what was happening, such as our baptism at infancy. Christian teaching states that “god” is omniscient (all knowing), omnipotent (all powerful) and omnipresent (all present, or present in all places at all times). While as humans we cannot truly comprehend of a being this powerful, we are equally unable to comprehend a universe that is potentially infinite, one that potentially has existed forever and will continue existing forever. Regardless, these three attributes of many deities worshipped as “god” have been established since humans first evolves to the point of believing in some type of higher entity.
While these attributes of “god” could be argued in countless blog posts due to their flaws and violations of the simplest rules of logic, the one inconsistency that strikes me the most is how Christians will fight and die for their faith when, according to their own rules about “god,” it is a futile effort. This is not to say that their efforts will not produce real change in our world, it is just that by the beliefs of their faith any effort is irrelevant. Everything that has happened, is happening or will happen has not only been foreseen by “god,” but it’s also part of this mysterious plan that we are not supposed to know but just have faith exists and is in our best interest to adhere to. By this logic, we are truly helpless creatures as the plan of “god” will counter any of our efforts to change it, whether it be through prayer or physical actions.
However, despite these failures of logic, Christians continue to hold to the fact that we have free will and that we need to take action to curry favor with an infinitely divine being. Throughout history, Christians have been compelled through their faith to commit horrible atrocities such as attempting to convert other cultures to the Christian faith and to continue to profess their superiority over other religions and faiths despite having no proof other than their collective beliefs that their divine being is superior to that of other religions and faiths whose “god” simply doesn’t exist.
Despite this sense of entitlement and superiority along with the unwavering belief that their “god” controls all, Christians will nonetheless continue to violently and vehemently oppose any force that they see as a threat. As Satanists knowing Christian doctrine and belief, we would expect Christian faiths to not verbally and physically attack us, but in fact to mock or ignore us for our futile efforts or even try to convert us in some sad act of pity to save our souls from what they believe to be eternal damnation. However, their reactions could be no further from reality. Satanists, when either speaking out on our beliefs on social media or gathering in public, are met with little but hate, anger and disgust by those Christians whose viewpoints oppose ours.
While these Christians might claim – and truly believe – that we are an adversary of their “god,” I believe that their lashing out in hatred and anger has more to do with their disgust of our values and lifestyle choices than in any religious faith that we may be in violation of. The evidence can be clearly seen in comparing the Ten Commandments to what Christians actually protest against and actively fight for. You’ll see Christians rally together in hundreds and thousands to support the pro-life movement when no mention of modern-day medical abortions actually exists in the Bible, less the commandment not to kill. Christians will gladly yell vile obscenities outside of an abortion clinic without a shred of empathy or compassion. On the other hand, when was the last time you have seen a Christian protest against not honoring thy father and mother outside of a trial where a child kills one or both of their parents? Why don’t we see protests outside of an individual’s home when they commit adultery? Why do we not see them protesting outside of businesses for remaining open during the Sabbath? The answer, simply, is that they just don’t care, or don’t care enough to take action. There isn’t enough of an affront to their own perceived ethics and morality to do anything about it. It is – to me, at least – disheartening to see many Catholics turn a blind, ignorant eye to the abuses by their own clergy against children to commit a proportionate reaction to the Catholic institution.
Although I haven’t been a Satanist for long, I have learned quite a bit about the hatred and violence they have enacted against us. Christians will gladly gather at our public ceremonies and rituals, scream at us, display signs against us and aggressively take any effort to thwart the profession of our faith simply because of the word “satan” being attached to it. Despite the commandment stating thou shalt not kill, Satanists are met with death threats and threats of harm and violence on a daily basis.
My question to these Christians and all others who oppose both our community and our efforts is: is your faith truly so weak that we are legitimately perceived as a threat to you? Doesn’t your faith teach you that, in the end, the forces of “god” will ultimately defeat the forces of the biblical definition of “satan” as a force of evil? Is your hatred and outrage against us truly an affront to your faith or is it, in fact, simply your disgust for our lifestyle and the impact it will have on your Christian community? I would counter that your actions against us are not a profession of your faith, but a belief that humans have free will (although we believe that it is because of an absence of “god,” not because “god” bestowed this upon us) and a fear that allowing us to be a free part of YOUR community and society will go against the way you want the world to be. This is no different than racism or prejudice where the less enlightened simply don’t want people to be a part of our community because they are unlike them.
I implore all Satanists everywhere to continue to fight for those who are marginalized and outcast by our society. As we understand that our adversaries stand against us not out of supernatural fear but out of the human capacity to hate, we will learn how to defend both ourselves and others and stand together as one Satanic community.
